SNEAKING THROUGH
SingaSaint Alvan Yap shares his thoughts on Saints-Charlton at St. Mary's, 7th Dec '03.
After 14 league games in which only Beatts (with 99.99% of the goal tally), SuperKev (1 goal) and that youngster (1 goal) had netted for Saints, the rest of the squad, at last, thankfully, remembered how to kick a ball into a net in the clash against Charlton.
Killer, with a scrappy goal, and Ormer(g)od ("Oh-my-god! He finally scored!") with his poacher's strikes ensured that we just about took 3 points against a well-organised and technically sound Charlton.
Charlton's passing was superb at times a la Real Madrid, and in Scott Parker, they have England's version of ZZ. Evidence: His brilliant midfield play and his 2 out-of-this-world long-range strikes, which levelled the score in the second half. After Saints had led 2-0 at the end of the first, thanks to Killer and Oh-My-God with their first Premiership goals since nobody-knows-when.
The best, most exciting and most attacking Saints game for many a week, with numerous chances, near misses, flying saves, breathless end-to-end stuff from both sides. Most nail-biting too; the match could have swung either way at 2-2.
But a saint must have been watching out for us, as Oh-My-God reacted with pure instinct to hook a pass (which was pinballing around the penalty box)
into goal, 4 minutes from time. And won us 3 points.
Now we're 8th in the standings, just 5 points behind 4th-placed Fulham, 2 behind 'Pool (5th) and Charlton (6th), and 1 behind Newcastle (7th).
Marching up the table, that's what we're doing.
"Oh when the Saints..."
