Saints named Best Fans of the Year!

Chink In The Armour?

You know how it is these days, everything is made in China lah. Saints can't afford Zinedine Zidane, so they have done the next best thing and brought in Zheng Zhi, captain of the Chinese national team, for a 10-day trial. Zheng, 24, is a central defender and was Chinese Footballer of the Year for 2003.

ZZ may not be ZZ (if you know what I mean), but at least he is well capable of performing the most important function of a footballer these days - selling shirts - so this may yet be a spectacular piece of business by Prune Juice. And if ZZ lets in just four against the likes of Spurs, that would be an improvement. More

Once a St Rachan, Always a St Rachan

Wee Gordon St Rachan was asked on Football Focus if he fancied the Pompey job after Redcrapp crapped on them (smellier than ever obviously) and he said, "They are a good club with good fans, but I am an ex-Saints manager and a Southampton man, it would never work." Good on ya Gordy! Ginger Bites

Beatt up Lambo

About noon on Wed 24/11, Beatts (with Telfs as passenger) had an accident on Redbridge roundabout. He went up the back of a Volkswagen Golf in his very posh silver Lamborghini. Apparently his car got stuck under the car in front and there were a few workmen doing roadworks close by and they tried to help him by bouncing his car up and down to try and free it! Pics

1976 FA Cup Winner's Medal for Sale

Breaking news! All's well that ends well! Rupert Lowe acting for Southampton FC has bought Peter's medal for £10,200 and the club will display it at the stadium for all the fans to enjoy. Medal comes home, Rodrigues is ecstatic.

Saints captain Peter Rodrigues' 1976 FA Cup winner's medal has been put up for auction by his daughter Amanda behind his back. Peter had given it to her as a keepsake about 10 years ago but Amanda has now gone against his wishes and Peter has failed to stop the sale.

Sportingold will conduct the auction on 1st October and the medal, ironically listed as Lot 076, is valued at £10,000.

Saints fans had hoped that the club would bid for Peter's medal (after all it is Saints' only FA Cup winner's medal and it is the captain's medal) and put it on permanent display at the club (or return it to Peter). But in a shocking display of parsimony the club have said they are not bidding for it.

Hopefully Prune Juice (or some wealthy fan) will do the right thing and spare some loose change for what is after all a worthwhile Saints memento.

The Jelle Van Damme Song

Sung to the tune Men at Work [down under]

We have a man from Brussels

I said, Do you speak in my language?
He just smiled and gave me a Van Damme body check sandwich.

Danny Wallace

Saints are having a benefit game on May 17 at St. Mary's Stadium for legend Danny Wallace who is afflicted with multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis is an incurable but non-life threatening illness that causes fatigue in most sufferers. In some cases, such as Danny's, the sufferer has difficulty walking. Danny has to walk with a cane.

Danny holds the record for youngest player ever to play for Saints at the age of 16 years 314 days, debuting on November 29, 1980. He scored 79 goals in 299 starts and 18 substitute appearances over nine years, during arguably the greatest spell in Saints' history when we finished league runners-up to Liverpool in the 1983-84 season.

Sexist Saints?

The official site in their reporting of football as played by our girls (the Southampton Saints) has curiously come up with the following headlines: Women Go Down, Women On Top!, Women Open A Gap, Women Blow It!, and now Women Come Second.

Are we fans guilty of reading too much into it or is the official site being deliberately... playful?

You decide!

Anti-Hoddle Song

Just so Rupert Lowe gets the message loud and clear, Saints fans plan to sing the following to the tune of Que Sera Sera:-

As I am chairman of the Saints,
I asked the fans who should it be,
Should it be Hoddle, or someone else,
Here's what they said to me:

"Wash your mouth out Lowe,
The message is clearly no,
So tell Hoddle where to go, save yourself some woe!"

We Hate Hoddle!!!

Best Fans of 2003

Sports commentator Jonathan Pearce has named Saints fans 'Best Fans of the Year'. In the Sunday Mirror (28-12-03) he writes:

Best Fans of the Year

Should this award go to the legions who turned Sydney red, white and blue or the barmy army who suffer the trials and tribulations of touring with the England cricket team?

I'll go against both of these deserving, rumbustious crews and choose instead Southampton's loyal fans who turned the Millennium Stadium on FA Cup Final day into a rich colour of hope and passion.

They treated the day as a unique event. One to be cherished.

It made such a welcome change from the tired, glib reaction you get from supporters of the big clubs who have been there, bought the T-shirt and couldn't give a damn.

I admire much about Southampton FC. I didn't much like the silly drama played out over the link between Gordon Strachan and Leeds. But I sincerely hope the fans have more days out like Cardiff 2003.
