Losses pared from £3.3m to £1.0m.
Modest reduction in turnover from £25.7m to £23.2m.
Cash positive in the period with net debt reducing from £21.4m to £19.2m.
Profit on player trading reduced from £11.2m to £7.5m, but Saints were able to reduce losses by substantially reducing operating costs and improving fiscal control.
Verdict: Not as bad as feared.

|
Ekelund (5 goals in 17 appearances) joined Saints on loan after the 1994 pre-season, when both Saints and FC Barcelona were holding a training camp in Holland and stayed at the same hotel. Saints coach Alan Ball and Barca's Dutch manager Johann Cruyff were old friends and had taken family holidays together. Cruyff walked in during Saints' evening meal, and chatted with the players and Ball. After a long chat, he said he had to leave and be with his squad, and asked Ball what gift he wanted. "A left-sided midfielder," replied Ball, and Cruyff said, "No problem, I will leave one in the morning." In the morning, the Saints coach found a player in full Barcelona tracksuit in the hotel lobby, and his name was Ronnie Ekelund.
Ronnie was an instant hit at The Dell, forming a great partnership with Matt Le Tissier. He was skillful with the ball and had great pace, clever movement and superb finishing. At first Saints wondered why Barcelona had let him go so easily, but the reasons soon became clear when it emerged Ronnie was carrying a back injury. The Saints medical team felt that this could only be cured by surgery, but Ronnie refused to 'go under the knife'; this disagreement put paid to any hopes of a permanent transfer deal.
