Year I got hooked on Saints 93/94 as a Le Tissier fan. Fully converted to a Saint in 95/96.
Why Saints Back in 1993, I was a Sec 2 boy more interested in Manga (Japanese comics, a passion I have up till today) than anything else in the world. I was particularly engrossed in this comic titled “Captain Tsubasa? a long-running series that is still in production today! The manga showed this little boy who joined a rag-tag soccer team which did not even have a place to train, and how he helped the team against all odds to win the provincial championships and eventually the national championships. The series being manga had flowery and exaggerated ball skills in which Tsubasa weaves his way through water-tight defences and scores scorching goals from all perceivable angles. I was perfectly happy as a 14-year old, feeding off this manga world, not knowing that there was a real Captain Tsubasa dazzling crowds at the Dell.
One of my friends said that if ever there was anyone comparable to Tsubasa, it had to be Matthew Le Tissier. I remember the doubt I had back then, but nevertheless I watched the EPL highlights for the first time that week... a week that changed everything. Le Tissier was finally given back his starting position under the hated Ian Branfoot, and went on to score two of the most memorable goals in Tsubasa fashion. In a game that Newcastle dominated, Matt single-handedly won us the game. His first goal still ranks as many fans' all-time favourite as he flicked the ball up with his heel, chipped it round Venison and then over Scott before side-footing it into the bottom corner. Minutes later he almost topped it with the winner as he controlled the ball on his thigh to hit a 30-yard dipping volley that sent the Dell wild. It certainly did send me wild. Matt's sheer artistry coupled with the fact that Southampton at the time depended on this one man - like the team under Tsubasa - made me a rabid Le Tissier fan.
It was during the 95/96 season when Le Tiss hit a four-month barren spell that I realized I was following the Saints despite the poor showing from Le God. I was not just a Le Tissier fan any more, I had become a true Southampton fan.
What I expect of SingaSaints SingaSaints to help build up a firm foundation to spread the word for the Saints! This requires enthusiasm from everyone involved, from the leaders right down to the members. Make this fan club a community we can really belong to and be proud of.
What I want to see on this site I hope that SingaSaints will grow in stature and perhaps warrant the securing of a commercial server so that I can put forward the many plans that I have in mind for this website (Ed. Julian is the site designer) not possible at the moment due to the free nature of the server and the lack of time on my part.
