Feeling blue

PORTSMOUTH have been charged with making an illegal approach for Harry Redknapp when he was Southampton manager.

Premier League chiefs received a complaint from Saints and charged Pompey with breaching the rules.

A league spokesman said: "The punishment will be anything from a reprimand to a fine. This is not similar to the Ashley Cole case, which was more about integrity.

"This is a matter between a Premiership and Championship club — which makes it less serious. But, nonetheless, we still feel the need to investigate.

"We will call together representatives from both clubs to conclude our investigations."

Redknapp quit his job at St Mary's last month and took charge of his former club just four days later.

Saints chairman Rupert Lowe said he was not happy and would look for action to be taken. Now the league have decided there is a case to answer.

But Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric insisted he had done everything by the book and scoffed: "Lowe's accusation is so insignificant, with everything else on my plate.

"I'm not going to waste my energy on it. I've got bigger and more important things to worry about."

Redknapp said claims of an illegal approach were 'not true'. He added: "What a load of old tosh.

"If they've nothing better to do, great. They will waste their time, as usual."

Chelsea copped a £300,000 fine for making an illegal approach to Arsenal left-back Cole.
