Antti Niemi - one of the Prem's finest
Southampton FC goalkeeper Antti Niemi has been named Finland's player of the year at the traditional post-Finnish Cup final gala.
Premiership's finest
The 32-year-old Finland keeper, who has also represented HJK Helsinki, FC Kobenhavn and Rangers FC, moved to Southampton for approximately 3m euros in August 2002 and has since earned a reputation as one of the finest goalkeepers in the Premiership.
Cup run
Within weeks of his arrival, Niemi usurped Welsh international goalkeeper Paul Jones from the Southampton lineup and went on to star in the run which took the south-coast club to the 2003 FA Cup final.
Scheweleff shines
After Myllykosken Pallo-47 won the Finnish Cup on Saturday, Niemi was named as player of the year, New Jersey Wildcats midfield player Anne Mäkinen picked up the women's award and Tampere United striker Henri Scheweleff was named Finland's under-21 player of the season.
