UGLY INSIDE Ted Bates honoured with road by Nick Illingsworth 01-12-05 Mary Bates declares the Ted Bates Road open (larger photo) Southampton Football Club legend Ted Bates has been honoured with the naming of a road after him in the shadow of both the St Mary's Stadium and also the very roots of SFC, St Mary's Church. Ted Bates was honoured recently with the opening of Ted Bates Road, in a ceremony conducted by the Mayor of Southampton. Mary Bates, Ted's widow, formally declared the road open. It couldn't be better placed being only a 5-minute walk from St Mary's Stadium, and situated so that when Saints are at home, thousands of fans going to the game will stream past it and perhaps think of Ted. It is situated on the new housing development in Chapel on Andersons Road. In simple terms for those who may wish to see it, it is directly behind the Chapel Arms (formerly the Le Tiss).
