Weekly Kickabout
This is a short report of SingaSaints' first ever kickabout on Saturday 7th Sep 02. 10 of us (8 Saints and 2 guests, 'guests' meaning non-Saints fans) met at half-past three at Redhill MRT Station to play footy at the nearby Gan Eng Seng School field.
We actually started with 9 players as Khairul was late. Using sticks-and-stones, the teams of 4 and 5 each were determined and after half an hour the numerically advantaged team not surprisingly came away victorious 5-3. Outstanding were Suan (dribbles like Ryan Giggs) and Kevin (belts a mean ball).
Then Khairul arrived and we started over again with 5 on each side. One side led 4-1 and looked to run away comfortably. But then the other side fought back with determination and clawed their way to 4-all before edging out in front 6-4! The cause of the team that led 4-1 wasn't helped by their player Nicuz having to leave when the score was 4-4. He had promised his girlfriend who was watching on the sidelines that he would stop at 5.30 pm. We let him go as ... well, if a guy has to attend to his gal, he's got to attend to his gal!
The game ended at about 5.45 pm and we headed for the showers. Then we crossed the road to eat at a hawker centre. We conducted an informal but worthwhile meeting over dinner, discussing issues ranging from membership fees to team jerseys.
The most important things we agreed on at the meeting were:
a. Members under the age of 21 should pay a one-time registration fee of $5 to join. No yearly subscription fee will be charged.
b. Members aged 21 and above will pay a one-time registration fee of $10 to join and a yearly subscription of $30.
c. At the above rates, the club of about 30 members should therefore raise something like a thousand dollars. Part of this sum of money will go towards making a banner to hang at our official pub (Club Vegas, lately known as Nuerhong) and towards printing namecards and other promotional material.
d. We will meet at Gan Eng Seng School every Saturday at 4 pm for a kickabout. Then we will go to Club Vegas to watch EPL matches on large-screen tv. Those who can't devote half a Saturday to SingaSaints' activities can just come for the kickabout or go later in the evening to Club Vegas.
e. We will write to Southampton Football Club seeking their recognition of SingaSaints as an official Saints supporters club. If they recognise us as such, we will be able to enjoy discounts on Saints merchandise.
f. Julian and Suan will work closely on the design of the SingaSaints website while Cody and Kelvin will work together on the design of SingaSaints' logo and namecards. Julian and Suan are studying computer science while Kelvin is studying at NAFA, one of Singapore's top design schools.
